Reflections on TELL( Week 1)

Among the courses I’ve been introduced to this semester, one that stands out and has piqued my interest is Technology enhanced language learning (TELL). My blog focuses on this course, reflecting on what I’ve learnt and gleaned from the lectures delivered. So far, 3 lectures have been delivered and they have been all about the basics; what is TELL, the need of TELL, How technology can be leveraged for the four pillars of language learning, What is Blog, how to create blog and finally how blog can help in honing reading and writing skills.

Here goes…

Language and Technology

With the pace that the world is being digitalized due to the breakthroughs and advancements in technology, every sphere of life, every sector and every institution is being revolutionized. Educational sector is not an exception. It is not spared from this strong and unrelenting wind of change. One can’t stop the change but one can equip themselves with skills to keep up with it. TELL is exactly for this purpose; to equip students and teachers of language with necessary skills to keep up the innovations so that they don’t lag behind. TELL is about ‘exploiting’ and leveraging any technology; computers, mobile phones or AI, to improve and enhance the process of language learning. Watching YouTube videos, reading articles or blogs and social media apps can help with it. Language learning involve honing all four skills; reading, writing, speaking and listening and technology has the potential to help with that.

Blogging and Language Learning

Blogging is a fun way one can learn a language especially reading and writing. How does that work? Blog is like a personal diary where one can express whatever they want; their opinions, thoughts or reflections. Writing blogs daily or frequently can help improve writing. Also replying to comments can help in improving communication skills. Moreover, reading blogs of other people can improve reading and provide valuable insights into various topics. Furthermore, to some extent, listening skills can be improved as bloggers posts videos on their blogs too.

From the lectures I’ve learnt how easy it is to learn a language through technology compared to the traditional methods. It’s fun, convenient, engaging and mostly free. Being an English major student with specialization in linguistics, this course is right up my alley.
